Joshua Tree Visitor Center: Located near the park’s North entrance, the Joshua Tree Visitor Center serves as the primary hub for visitors, providing essential information on park regulations, safety measures, and trail updates to enhance your experience. Cottonwood Visitor Center: Nestled in the southern region of the park, the Cottonwood Visitor Center provides a gateway to the Colorado Desert, offering valuable resources and information for visitors exploring this unique ecosystem. Discover exhibits that delve into the desert’s flora and fauna, from the iconic Joshua trees to the elusive desert tortoise. 

How to get There:

From the West: To reach Joshua Tree National Park from the west, take Interstate 10 East towards Indio, California. After approximately 140 miles, take exit 168 for CA-62 towards 29 Palms/Yucca Valley. Merge onto CA-62 East and continue for about 20 miles until you reach the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. 

From the East: If traveling from the east, take Interstate 10 West towards Indio, California. After approximately 220 miles, take exit 168 for CA-62 towards 29 Palms/Yucca Valley. Merge onto CA-62 East and continue for about 20 miles until you reach the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. 

From the South: To reach Joshua Tree National Park from the south, take Highway 111 North towards Indio, California. In Indio, continue onto CA-111 North and merge onto Interstate 10 East towards Phoenix. After approximately 17 miles, take exit 117 for CA-62 towards 29 Palms/Yucca Valley. Merge onto CA-62 East and continue for about 55 miles until you reach the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. 

Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park boasts a rich history dating back thousands of years, with evidence of human occupation by Native American tribes such as the Serrano, Chemehuevi, and Cahuilla peoples. In the 19th century, miners, ranchers, and homesteaders traversed the area, leaving behind remnants of their presence, including abandoned mines and homestead cabins. Today, visitors can explore these historical sites and gain insight into the park’s cultural heritage.

Among the park’s popular attractions are its distinctive rock formations, including Hidden Valley, Barker Dam, and Skull Rock. These natural wonders offer opportunities for rock climbing, hiking, and photography, showcasing the rugged beauty of the desert landscape. Additionally, Joshua Tree National Park is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species, including the namesake Joshua trees, as well as desert bighorn sheep, coyotes, and various species of birds.

As a designated national park, Joshua Tree holds significant ecological and cultural value. Points of Interest:

Hidden Valley Nature Trail: This area is by far one of the most accessible at Joshua Tree National Park. You’ll pass by a bouldering spot known as the “Giant Burrito” and on the other side of the trailhead there’s a nice picnic area and grove of Joshua Trees to wander under and around.

Barker Dam Nature Trail: For another easy hike at Joshua Tree National Park, this is your best bet with huge Joshua Trees, interesting geological features, and water feature. The 1.3 mile loop is perfect for those looking to explore this area without getting too deep into the desert terrain.

Cholla Cactus Garden: One of the more beautiful attractions at Joshua Tree National Park is this densely covered cactus garden. The Cholla cactus are known to almost glow is the sun rises or sets, the light catches the needles and creates a sort of mystical feeling

Skull Rock: This rock formation is by far the most well-known at Joshua Tree National Park. Visitors often roam through the desert landscape here and climb up the rock face for Instagram updates. If you’re looking for other rock climbing options, there are more than 8,000 climbing routes, maps and tips can be found at the information center.
Cottonwood Springs Oasis: Finding water like the Cottonwood Spring is a rarity in the desert. Due to an earthquake many years ago, it birthed this unique spring that averages a 500 galloon flow per day. It’s a lovely place for birdwatching in the shady spots or along the water.
