White Sands National Park, located in southern New Mexico, is home to the world’s largest gypsum dune field, covering 275 square miles of stunning white sand dunes. This unique landscape offers visitors an otherworldly experience, characterized by its vast, shimmering dunes that stretch as far as the eye can see. Established as a national monument in 1933 and designated a national park in 2019, White Sands protects the delicate desert ecosystem and provides a habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. Visitor Centers:

White Sands Visitor Center: Located at the park’s entrance, this center offers essential information on park regulations, safety tips, and the best spots to visit. Through engaging exhibits, visitors can learn about the park’s unique geology, wildlife, and cultural history, enhancing their overall experience.

How to get There:

From the North/West: Take Interstate 25 (I-25) South towards Las Cruces, New Mexico. Once in Las Cruces, merge onto US-70 East. Continue on US-70 East for approximately 60 miles, passing through the Organ Mountains and the White Sands Missile Range. Keep following the signs for White Sands National Park; the entrance will be clearly marked on your right-hand side.

From the South: Start your journey in El Paso, Texas. Head north on Interstate 10 (I-10) West and take exit 162A to merge onto I-25 North towards Las Cruces, New Mexico. From Las Cruces, merge onto US-70 East. Drive for about 60 miles, passing through the scenic Organ Mountains and the expansive White Sands Missile Range. Look for the signs directing you to White Sands National Park, and turn right into the park entrance.

From the East: For those coming from the east, begin in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Take US-70 West for approximately 15 miles. As you drive, you will pass Holloman Air Force Base on your left. Continue straight until you see the clearly marked entrance to White Sands National Park on your left-hand side. The park entrance is located between mile markers 199 and 200.

White Sands National Park

White Sands National Park, located in southern New Mexico, is a unique natural wonder known for its vast expanse of white gypsum sand dunes. Established as a national monument in 1933 and re-designated as a national park in 2019, it protects the world’s largest gypsum dune field, spanning 275 square miles in the Tularosa Basin. The park’s history dates back to prehistoric times, with evidence of human presence over 10,000 years ago, including Paleo-Indian artifacts and fossilized footprints. During World War II, the area was used for missile testing, and remnants of this era can still be observed. Points of Interest:

Dune Life Nature Trail: This 1-mile loop trail offers an excellent introduction to the park’s unique ecosystem. Interpretive signs along the trail provide information about the plants and animals that have adapted to survive in the harsh conditions of the gypsum dunes, making it an educational and scenic walk for all ages.
Alkali Flat Trail: For a more adventurous experience, the Alkali Flat Trail provides a 5-mile round-trip hike across the heart of the dunes. Hikers are treated to expansive views and the serene beauty of the undulating white sands, with opportunities to see unique geological features and remnants of ancient lake beds.
